Are used to cut or level a paint film surface with an abrasive machine polish (or compound) or to apply a polish to large surface areas. Aggressively removes 1500 – 2000 grit scratches, but will leave hazing, use a foam pad and a finishing polish to eliminate. Paint Removed by Polishing

Using a medium abrasive polish and a rotary polisher will remove approximately 0. 1 Mil (3 (Microns)) from the paint surface (typically 4 passes at 1500-1800 RPM) but there are many variables such as polish/compound and speed / pressure used that may affect the paint removed) There comes a point when you must judge wither removing a scratch will compromise the clear coat and if so youll have to live with the imperfection.

If you have reservations about the amount of paint surface removed or the amount of paint coating remaining the use of a paint thickness gauge (PTG) is arbitrary

These numbers are offered as a guide only, as there are too many variables to provide any more than an approximation.

Wool pad compositions

Manufacturers control a pad’s aggressiveness by increasing or decreasing the nap height. As you shorten the length from a 1.5  inch, down to a 1- inch nap, the pad becomes much more aggressive because the individual wool strands are able to stand on end more readily. This creates a scrubbing action whereas the 1-1/2 inch strands lay down almost immediately when used.

Natural wool is most aggressive – 50/50 wool/acrylic blends intermediate – lambs wool the least aggressive Always use the least aggressive product first, evaluate the surface, then only if necessary `step-up’ to a more abrasive product and / or pad.

Natural wool

Leaves clear coat finishes with less haze and swirls than conventional polishing pads, fibres can be compressed and still recover their natural shape, less shedding, as they are manufactured with more fibres per square inch than synthetic wool pads. A denser pile surface distributes and applies material evenly and consistently, natural fibres are tapered with no splattering of applied materials and less scratch marks.

Cuts like natural sheepskin but finishes like a foam pad, the foamed fibres resist matting and compression. The foaming process also creates minute air pockets at the base of the fibres, which improves cushioning and retention of compounds and polishes.

Purple Foamed Wool Pad

Foamed Wool is a patented process that places a bottom cushion of microscopic polymer foam particles under a top layer of lambs wool fibres. Lake Country Mfg. developed these pads for high production, OEM/Industrial users. Aggressively removes 1500 grit scratches, leaving a lustrous finish with no hazing by reducing compounding swirls while retaining a high gloss Patented process encapsulates the base of the lambs wool fibres with microscopic polythene foam particles. Cuts like natural sheepskin but finishes like a foam pad. Foamed fibres resist caking and matting, foaming process also creates minute air pockets at the base of the fibres, which improves cushioning and retention of compounds and polishes.

Note- not recommended for random orbital machines (Porter Cable 7424, etc)

Blended wool

A mix of wool and synthetic materials, this could be wool and yarn for cutting, wool and polyester for polishing, the more synthetic material content the more abrasive the pad.

Synthetic wool

This material produces heat very rapidly, so be very careful with these pads as they can quickly cause damage to a paint surface and can cause major surface marring a four-ply twisted synthetic wool pad can destroy a clear coat in a very short time.

4 Ply 100% Twisted Wool

Each strand of high grade wool fibre is tightly twisted, allowing our pad to stay at a consistent level of aggression for longer periods of operation. Choose 3 inch, 4inch, and 5inch diameters with a 1/2inch or 3/4inch pile height.

Choose shorter pile for your most aggressive compounding and longer pile for aggressive compounding with greater durability.

50/50 Wool Acrylic

A unique fibre combination for light compounding comprised of 50% 4 ply twisted wool and 50% single strand wool/acrylic blend. Allows the operator to accomplish a range of light compounding to heavier polishing tasks depending on the compound or polish used.

Electrified White Sheepskin

The electrification process removes the microscopic barbs from the hairs in the wool resulting in a soft and effective compounding material that does not scratch the painted surface. Choose 3 inch, 4inch, and 5inch diameters with a 1/2inch or 3/4inch pile height.

Wool Pros & Cons

Pro -faster cutting generates less heat and therefore leaves the surface cooler, removes heavy oxidation much more efficiently than a form pad. Wool pads are easier to control compared to foam. They glide as the wool nap lies down and will conform to vehicle body shape easily. Make certain to spur the wool fibres when it loads up with product.

Con -wool can leave micro marring (buffer trails) finish with a foam pad to remove. Dont overwork the polish as wool will break diminishing abrasives faster than foam, the surface lubricants will dry up faster and you could end up dry buffing unless youre careful.

General notes

1.Cut with wool pads; (foam produces the most surface friction heat) and finish with foam pads, the fibres of the wool pad leave a very fine micro marring on the paint surface.
2.Speed, the general rule is; limit speed on wool pads to 1500 RPM The bigger the pad the faster the cut, the coarser the compound, the faster the cut, the more aggressive the pad, the faster the cut Wool cuts faster than lambs wool, foamed wool is next and then foam. You pay the price for polishing too fast with swirl marks caused by the compound and pad combination.
3.Compared to foam; wool pads have a larger available cutting surface area per square inch, which is due to the structure of the individual wool fibres compared to that of foam, allowing faster cutting action with less friction heat, utilizing less downward pressure
4.The application of water – is not needed to supplement surface lubrication, but it helps to free the abrasive from sticking to the wool fibres. It also helps the pad to conform to surface contours more easily, effectively increasing the surface-area. Note- it may increase the abrasive abilities of the pad.

Every vehicle owner has to take care of their vehicle. Most of us tend to take more care than others in that we want to makes sure that our car is in great condition. Therefore, some of us tend to be a bit more cautious and tend to change certain parts of our cars sooner than is necessary. This can be the same said of a vehicle’s wheels and tyres. This is a question we all ponder. Have you ever just walked around your car and looked at your tyres wondering if it is time to change the tyres? You probably have. There are certain tell-tale signs that indicate when to change your tyres.

If your tyre’s tread is less than 1mm then it is time to change your tyres. It is imperative that you change it at this stage and don’t leave it for another time because, believe it or not, it is the law. Besides the law, it is very unsafe to drive with smooth tyres. You risk the tyres not being able to grip the road which means that it could slide in wet or even in dry conditions. Of course, it is much worse if it slides in wet conditions because you could lose all control of your vehicle due to lack of sufficient grip.

If your car’s tyre has a puncture this is a definite indication that you need to replace the affected tyre. You cannot drive with a tyre that is losing air as it will create an imbalance in your vehicle which can be very dangerous. A vehicle has to be sufficiently balance on all four wheels and tyres in order to drive optimally. Any imbalance can cause the car to sway out of control and bear into other vehicles or objects.

If your wheels and tyres are not properly aligned they may wear irregularly. If your tyres wear quickly and irregularly across the four tyres, this could be hazardous when driving as your tyres are not all wearing at the same pace. Some may be weaker than others and could cause irregularity in your driving and result in less than optimum grip.

Therefore, you know it is time to replace your wheels and tyres when the tyre tread is less than 1mm, the tyre has a puncture or there is irregularity in the tyre’s wear.

You need to ensure that your tyres are inflated at the correct pressure. There are cars out there that have two recommended air pressure ratings, one for light loads and one for heavy loads. You will find the information on the tyre pressure requirements for your vehicle in your owner’s manual or on a sticker in the door jammer or in a petrol filler cap.. There is a number on the tyre’s side that indicates the maximum pressure the tyre can withstand, not the recommended amount. There are possible consequences for inflating your tyres too much (high pressure) as well as if you inflate it to little (low pressure) because both could cause blow outs. Low pressure can cause extra heat buildup that can lead to a blowout at high speeds. Low tyre pressure has been connected to a lot of problems from accidents to premature wear, and even low petrol mileage. Your car will not handle or respond the way it is designed to if the tyres are under-inflated.

You also need to check on your tyre tread. Take note that the minimum legal tread depth limit in South Africa is 1mm. You should ensure that you change your tyres before the legal limit is reached. It is advisable that you check your tyre tread at least once a month; rather be safe than sorry. Secure and accurate tyre tread is essential when traveling on a long road trip and on highways. Tyres heat up on long trips which can cause blowouts on worn out tyres. If the tyres are showing any tread wear, replace the tyres. If the tyres have uneven tread wear, check the alignment too. Ensure there are no defects in the sidewall of the tyres or bulges and bald spots on your tyres. It is critical for steering and braking to have good, well maintained tyres.

In case you have identified a need to change the tyre you will need to be prepared by insuring that the spare is inflated and that your jack is in good condition. If you are changing a tyre on the road side then you must turn on your hazard lights. You need to ensure that there is no one in the car while you are changing the tyre. You need to pull up the handbrake and take the car out of gear. The wheels on the side that is not being lifted must be blocked. The nuts on the wheels should be loosened while the vehicle is on the ground. The jack needs to be placed on firm ground that is as flat as possible. You need to slowly raise the car and then you can now remove the nuts and the wheel. Replace the wheel with the spare and replace the wheel nuts and make sure they are secured. When you lower the car you should tighten them properly; if you over- tighten the nuts you can damage the brake components and if you do not tighten them enough that is very dangerous so you have to be extra careful.

You should get that changed tyre checked at the nearest service station to ensure that all is done right and ensure your safety on the road.

There is an ongoing dispute between the US government and electric car manufacturers regarding potential safety concerns. The fact that electric vehicles of today tend not to make any noise up to 17 mph has prompted calls for legislation to pre-fit all electric vehicles with noise technology which will filter out at 17 mph. This may seem rather bizarre to those on the outside looking in but there are a number of aspects which need to be addressed.

Is safety really a problem with silent electric cars?

This has in the minds of some people opened up a number of opportunities for ring tone type noises to be added to electric cars as their “signature”. Would you recognise a non-traditional car noise?

The idea that some electric cars could have their own ring tone as a signature tune for their engines sounds good from a marketing point of view, but in reality it is a non-starter. Having a ringtone, or some other form of non-traditional engine noise, installed into an electric vehicle would be just as bad, if not worse, than having a silent vehicle.

Subconsciously you would not be able to connect some kind of ring tone signature tune with that of a traditional gasoline/petrol or electric vehicle – of which we are all very aware. So this would not in any shape or form assist with the safety aspects which have been drawn to the attention of the US government by various disabled charities and charities for the blind.

What does the electric vehicle industry think?

There will be some battles over the next few months with regards to noise creation for electric vehicles as the industry is not convinced. In a worst-case scenario the industry would like the sound effects to be filtered out at 12.4 mph at which point it believes that traditional electric engine noise would take over and act as a safety valve. There are even some electric car enthusiasts who believe that the silent engine associated with this type of vehicle is perhaps one of its best selling points.

Whatever happens in the future there is no doubt that electric vehicles will see some form of noise technology added in the years ahead. At the end of the day we are playing with safety, the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, and there can be no room for marketing angles and “off the wall ideas”.
